Facility

The Joint Laboratory's experimental work is carried out in HKUST's Aerodynamics and Acoustics Facility, which its Director also leads, together with the University's acoustic laboratory and sports science laboratories.

Projects use the facilities directly rather than through an external bureau: an athlete, a coach or a product designer can be in the room while a measurement is taken, and can change what is being tested between runs. The instruments available to a project are listed below.

Sports Wind Tunnel Wind tunnel test section

A low-speed tunnel with a large aerodynamic test section, twin turntables and a boundary-layer section, instrumented for drag and flow measurement.

Fan Array Fan array with a bicycle test setup

A compact, controllable-flow array for low-speed testing, prototyping and repeat on-rig studies at speeds an athlete can be exposed to safely.

Acoustic Laboratory Anechoic chamber

Anechoic, semi-anechoic and reverberation chambers for measuring the sound equipment makes, and for testing acoustic materials.

Using the facilities

Facility time is allocated through Laboratory projects. If you are working on a sports equipment, performance or ergonomics question and want to know whether the instruments fit it, contact the Laboratory with a short description of the measurement you need.
